SHADE, DIFFUSE, REDUCE SOLAR HEAT GAIN: EXPLORING THE DIFFERENT WAYS TO CONTROL DAYLIGHT

2023 MCN Cover featuring Wallner Expac article

ONTARIO, Calif.– September 01, 2023– The editorial staff at Metal Construction News has again turned to Wallner Expac for its expanded metal expertise- this time to share the different ways it can control daylight. It’s a versatile building material that can be used in many ways to control daylight, and this in-depth article, Controlling Daylight with Expanded Metal–is now available online and in print.

Written by Sr. Marketing Manager Manuel Menchaca for the September issue, this feature article explores a variety of ways expanded metal shades, diffuses light, and reduces solar heat gain. Shading is the most common application to control sunlight; however, expanded metal can also diffuse light: The open pattern allows light to pass through it, breaking it up and distributing it into smaller, uniform beams. Its reflectiveness can reduce solar heat gain: Sunlight and its heat are reflected, lowering the amount of heat absorbed by a building’s exterior.

Details and advantages for each of these expanded metal applications include:

  • Shading: How up to 85 percent of the daylight that would normally penetrate a window is blocked.
  • Light Diffusion: How a more evenly lit space is created and beneficial.
  • Reduced Solar Heat Gain: How both people and agriculture benefit from this.
  • Additional examples and images are presented in the article.

“Many people recognize expanded metal when they change the HVAC filters in their homes,” states Menchaca. “However, it’s such a universal product and I enjoy sharing its many uses– especially the architectural ones. They are my favorite as they really showcase expanded metal’s decorative applications such as façades and ceilings panels.”
